The scene is an aftermath of a fight between the main characters and one-time secondary characters. Shirley, a black lady in front of the Christmas tree, singing Amazing Grace with the accompaniment of Pierce, the old man playing the keyboard. The camera is first showing Shirley singing and then pans over each of the other main characters and their torn, messed-up clothes, their bloodied faces, and the snow in their hair, sitting next to one another in peace, to signify to the viewers how even though they fought, and it wasn't the Christmas spirit that Shirley was forced upon them through her own religion, they came together to celebrate their friendship. Beforehand, Shirley had invited all of them to her Christmas party before they leave for break, but upon finding out that everyone has a different religion than her (Annie is Jewish, Abed is Muslim, Troy is a Jehovah's Witness, Britta is an atheist, Jeff is agnostic, and Pierce is a born-again Buddhist), she starts to judge them and intentionally not recognize their religions. The emotional scene is that everyone feels the real spirit of Christmas, which is being together.
